1935 Auburn 851 Supercharged Cabriolet
Well I finally got the Auburn I have always wanted! When I sold the sedan in 2001, I rationalized this by the fact that I will not have a fleet of Auburns, and that I really wanted one of these, and/or of course a speedster. I was able to acquire this pretty much locally from Indiana Region Member Stephan Morgan, after promising my wife it would be resold. I was then able to sell the Packard which allows me to keep this car instead of moving it on. Since these pictures were taken Walt and I have removed all the stickers and aftermarket "safety" stuff and the car will make the show circuit this summer premiering at the Spring Grand Classic in French Lick.
One of about 19 known to exist, this car is the next best thing to the 35-36 Auburn Speedster, in fact from one point of view it might be preferable since you can actually take passengers along for the ride and it is more rare. Its sporty and flowing lines make it clearly the next best thing to a speedster.
This particularly nice example has been fully restored and is an exceptional driver as well.
As you can see all the chrome is in excellent condition and the paint is practically flawless with only the smallest of chips which have been properly touched up.
This Gordon Buehrig Design
was an update of the 34 Auburn, which was not received well by the public or
Company Management, although structurally and mechanically, it was a very
advanced car for its time. Mr. Buehrig came up with a tour de force of
Streamlining and Art Deco design cues which is legendary and is generally
considered the best Auburn of all time design wise and quite frankly one of the
most beautiful cars of the
Pre War era.
The car is finished in a nice Red with Maroon Belt moldings and Wire Wheels, one of the most striking color combinations I have seen on a 35-36 Auburn.
The car features a single side mounted spare, since the drivers side is reserved for the outside exhaust pipes, not only a lovely design cue but also functionally done to remove excess heat from the engine compartment
The dash and interior of this car are simply stunning and in excellent condition.
The leather is soft and supple and correctly restored to the original pattern
This car is the perfect CARavan car with its "modern" drivetrain and suspension. It is probably the most stable Pre War Car I have ever driven. It is tight and responsive and very capable of interstate cruising or the most demanding modern traffic. You can definitely beat people off the line in one of these if you are so inclined. The Auburn was one of the first cars with tube shocks, and this car is fitted with them making it handle extremely well.
The car would probably score about 95 points or so in Concourse judging making it a very strong number 2 car, if not approaching number 1 status. It is a driven car however, and everything works great. This is a hard to find combination: a car you can buy and drive and also show and win trophies with.
The Engine and Supercharger have just been rebuilt by a respected builder. The Dual Ratio Rear End has also been overhauled as well as the Transmission. The under carriage is fully detailed. One could conceivably have a Senior Car here with very little effort. The car has been properly rewired. There is really nothing left to do to this car...it is a great turnkey example!
Whether you are coming or going you are doing so in style with this rare car!
With Speedster prices climbing into the mid six figures in the past couple of years, look for these cars to appreciate in value. This car is an excellent investment as well as being incredibly fun to drive and show.
